Incident in Geneva

Tuesday 30 June 1936 has gone down in history because of the speech given that day by Haile Selassie, the exiled King of Kings of Ethiopia. A group of Italian journalists started insulting the Ethiopian emperor and defending the occupation of Addis Ababa by the Italian Army. The police ejected the hecklers, but due to a misunderstanding they seized an innocent bystander. Capa immediately saw what has happening and followed the group. The victim was a Spanish journalist. Caught up in the confusion, he had been arrested and forcibly removed by the police. One of the officers had covered his mouth to silence his protests of innocence. The fourth photograph is blurred, but it doesn’t matter: Capa managed to capture the scene and it was published with his name in the 8 July 1936 issue of Vu magazine.
