The children at Calle Peironcely 10

Robert Capa arrived in Madrid on 18 November 1936 without Gerda Taro, who had stayed behind in Paris. He photographed the volunteers of the International Brigades who were defending the university campus and the Casa de Campo. His images of the destruction of the Vallecas area of the city were published in Regards on 10 December with the caption “The crucified capital, remarkable images by Capa, our special correspondent in Madrid” and, on the cover, a picture of a frightened woman in the midst of the ruins. The magazine praised the bravery of its photographer, who had immortalised three children sitting outside their bullet-riddled house at number 10 on Calle Peironcely. Madrid City Council has identified and purchased the house, and there are plans to turn it into a museum on Robert Capa. This photograph is a vintage copy found in Argentina.
