The film España 36

Spain, 1936

In December 1936, when Capa reached the headquarters of the Twelfth International Brigade in Madrid, he was accompanied by the Russian documentary film-maker Roman Karmen. The two worked together, Karmen with his film camera and Capa with his photography cameras. Some of the images captured on the university campus in Madrid appear in the film España 1936, directed by Jean-Paul Le Chanois in Paris and produced by Luis Buñuel. The surrealist film director worked at the Spanish Embassy, where he was tasked with espionage and collecting propaganda images for use in documentaries and the press. The images captured by Capa, Taro and David Seymour (Chim) were rarely used in Spain during the civil war. They mainly appeared abroad, in the press and in numerous magazines and minor publications in support of Republican Spain, and in the documentary on the International Brigades, which also featured Henri Cartier-Bresson.
